“EA’s decision to close BioWare, the studio behind iconic RPGs such as Mass Effect and Dragon Age, marks a significant shift in the U.S. gaming landscape. The move will eliminate roughly 50 U.S. jobs and halt development on the next Mass Effect title, potentially affecting the supply of high‑profile RPGs for American consumers and reducing opportunities for U.S. game developers. The closure also signals a broader trend of consolidation and cost‑cutting in the industry, which could lead to higher prices for consumers as fewer studios compete for market share. Expert Analysis: This shutdown underscores the vulnerability of creative studios to corporate restructuring, and may prompt U.S. policymakers to revisit antitrust scrutiny of large gaming conglomerates to protect innovation and employment.”
BioWare, the legendary studio behind RPGs like Mass Effect , Dragon Age , and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic , is shutting down, the company confirmed in a statement. Alongside the closure, Electronic Arts has chosen not to continue development on the next Mass Effect game that was in the works, according to an announcement sent to EA staff.
The company is also laying off around 400 staffers, Bloomberg reports, including around 50 at BioWare. The changes follow EA being taken private by an investor group led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners in a $55 billion deal that closed in August.
